The Great Cobar Museum Underground Mining Experience

Project Background

In 2021 Cobar Shire Council received significant funding to complete stage one of the restoration works to The Great Cobar Museum to preserve the historical building and bring it back to its former glory.

In early 2022 Council were successful in receiving funding from the NSW State Government to commence stage 2 of The Great Cobar Museum which includes upgrades to the Coach House.

Underground Mining Experience Project Summary

In late 2022, Council were again successful in receiving funding from the NSW State Government to commence stage 3 of The Great Cobar Museum which includes the development of an underground mining experience. Both stage 2 and stage 3 works will occur concurrently to each other.

This project includes constructing walkways through landscape and historic mine site ruins and the installation of an interactive and educational underground mining experience. This project is set out to create an engaging meaningful and unique visitor experience.

Project Summary

Stage 1 upgrades to the Great Cobar Museum were jointly funded by Cobar Shire Council, the NSW Government Regional Cultural Fund Round 2 and Far Northwest Joint Organisation. This project consisted of restoration works to bring the historical building back to its former glory and preserve it for the future. In addition to the restoration works new exhibitions were installed to enhance the visiting experience.

Project Purpose

The Great Cobar Museum wins 3 awards at the National Trust Heritage Awards 2022.

The Great Cobar Museum and Dunn and Hillam Architects have recently been awarded with the top prize along with 2 other major awards at the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards 2022. The National Trust Heritage Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding practice in the field of heritage, awarding excellence in conversation, protection, and interpretation of aboriginal, built, natural and cultural heritage over the past year.

The Great Cobar Museum and Dunn and Hillam Architects took out the judge’s choice award following the completion of stage 1 project renewing and restoring the old heritage building. The Great Cobar Museum also won the conservation – build heritage award and a highly commended in conversation – interior and objects category.
